The First Macy’s Parade

One of the things that you might do with your family on Thanksgiving is to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on television. The first parade wasn’t exactly what you see today. It didn’t have the large balloons, the detailed floats of the marching bands. The first parade was in 1924 and had animals from the Central Park Zoo. Over the next three years, the animals would walk down the streets of New York with people leading them. Felix the Cat was the first balloon introduced to the parade. There was also a Goodyear float. Mickey Mouse was seen in the parade about seven years later along with several other balloons and floats. Each year introduces different characters and more acts that viewers can enjoy. Snoopy has been in the parade more times than any other character with a total of six appearances. There have been a few different variations of Snoopy as well as the other characters that are seen in the parade. Each character is held by several people who ensure that the balloon keeps from floating away and to make sure the balloon goes along the parade path. High school marching bands and cheerleaders are also featured in the parade with dancing acts included as well to increase the size of the event.
