A Small Organ That Is Not Really Needed

When you think of organs and parts of the body that you don’t need, the appendix and the wisdom teeth might come to mind. The gallbladder is also a small organ that you can live without. However, there are a few important features of the gallbladder that aid in the digestive system. At times, gallstones can form in the gallbladder. These stones can get lodged in the bile ducts, causing severe pain. If this happens, then the gallbladder usually needs to be removed. At other times, the gallbladder needs to be removed because it no longer functions properly in the body.

The gallbladder assists the liver. The liver makes bile, and the gallbladder stores it until other areas of the body need it to aid in digestion. For a healthy gallbladder, it’s often best to have a diet that is low in cholesterol and low in fat as gallstones are formed by too much cholesterol in the body. There are other things that can cause the stones to form, such as a significant loss of weight in a short time and pregnancy. Over 10 percent of the population has gallstones, but they don’t know about them because they don’t cause any significant pain.
