As everyone these days seems to be focusing more and more on the different types of diets that are available on the market, a new study has come out to show surprising results about weight loss. The traditional wisdom when it comes to weight loss is that the faster you can lose weight the better. Who doesn’t see ads for diet programs that promise to help you lose 20 pounds in 30 days? While these ads appeal the basic human desire for immediate gratification, quite the opposite might apply.

According to a study from Obesity journal, people who have higher levels of weight fluctuations in the first few weeks of a weight loss program are most likely to end up putting the weight back on over the course of 1 to 2 years as opposed to those who slowly and steadily lose weight. While this study is in its early stages and has yet to be replicated, we are learning a very new way of thinking when it comes to traditional weight loss approaches.

The conventional way of thinking would lead you to believe that weight loss were a one time event, someone loses X amount of pounds and then he is fine, but this study of 183 people over the course of two years shows quite the opposite. Those who slowly lost weight at the beginning didn’t have a problem with regaining weight later on, but those who had higher fluctuations would end up struggling more later on.

This shows that consistency is the key when it comes to weight loss, regardless of Nutrisystem cost, or the cost of whatever system you’re using. Regardless of your style of diet and exercise, if you start pushing too hard at the beginning, you will end up burning out over time. This might be for a variety of reasons and while the study isn’t definitive or conclusive yet, we can see that this goes hand in hand with the conventional wisdom that crash dieting just doesn’t work. One reason that crash dieting doesn’t work is primarily because while it is relatively easy to lose 4 pounds in a single week once, over the course of six months that would be an exhausting feat. Rather, those who lose one pound a week would experience less exhaustion and decision fatigue, allowing them to stay true to their diet.

An all or nothing attitude that often comes alongside crash diets tends to sabotage weight loss efforts in the long run. If you’re looking to permanently slim down, then you are far better with developing a weight loss plan that is slower and takes more time in the long run. While it may go against the grain and your desire for rapid results, you will be forced to focus more on lifestyle changes and as a result, will keep the weight off for the rest of your life. The more dietary rules that you follow, the bigger chance you have of experiencing binge eating sessions or overeating purely because of the amount of decision fatigue that happens when you deny yourself what you want for so long. Instead of eliminating all of the foods that you love from your diet, try to simply cut back on them. You will find that in the long run, this will fare much better than if you went all out.
