The world lost three celebrities on January 2nd, 2019. While it’s a sad way to ring in the new year, it doesn’t seem that unusual on the surface. However, the trio of Super Dave Osborne, “Captain” Daryl Dragon and “Mean” Gene Okerlund had one weird thing in common — besides being known by nicknames. The respective actor-comedian, musician and wrestling announcer all died at the age of 76 — on the same day.
The 27 Club
You may have heard of the 27 Club. This is one club no one wants to join. It refers to the group of famous musicians, actors and other celebrities who died at the age of 27. The earliest and most-often recognized members of this unfortunate group included these singers and musicians:
- Brian Jones
- Jimi Hendrix
- Janis Joplin
- Jim Morrison
Actually, while people talked about the eerie coincidence during the years of 1969 to 1971, the time period when it happened, it wasn’t until 1994 that the macabre “club” was given a name. That’s when Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain joined the unlucky group.
Of course, the 27 Club gets more attention because of the “members'” young ages and sudden deaths. However, given their lifestyles, it might not be all that surprising that they passed on way too young. This latest group, which might be called the 76 Club, died of more gradual illnesses ranging from cancer to renal failure. Whatever the reasons, the celebrities in both groups will be missed.
