One of the treats that you might enjoy at Christmas is a candy cane. Most candy canes are red and white. Some are made with different flavors than peppermint and feature different colors. Many people think that the candy cane was white to represent the purity of Jesus. Some might associate the red and white color with this notion, but there is a bit more to why the candy cane has its color and shape.
There have been sticks of white candy for centuries. Supposedly, a choirmaster in Cologne shaped a stick into a hook to represent a shepherd’s staff. The candy was given to children so that they would be quiet while they were watching the nativity celebration in the church. There are also stories about pastors in Cologne making candy sticks into hook shapes to remind people of Jesus. The red stripes didn’t come along until much later. They started appearing in the early 20th century. Candy canes were sometimes used as decorations, so that is likely the reason behind the stripes being added so that there was more color to the candy instead of a white hook on a Christmas tree or hanging on a wreath or piece of tinsel.
