Sri Dalada Maligawa is the Temple of the Tooth
The temple is situated in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and its real name is Sri Dalada Maligawa. When you translate this to English, it means “The Temple of the Tooth”. The Sri Dalada Maligawa is the most sacred temple in the entirety of Sri Lanka.
It is famous for its carvings and the beautiful art that is unique to Sri Lanka. The most important part of the Dalada Maligawa is the octagon. Thousands of people line up each day to get a glimpse of its majesty.
Only Surviving Relic of Buddha
This temple was built within the royal palace complex which houses the only surviving relic of Buddha. You may not be surprised to learn that this relic is a tooth, which is venerated by Buddhists. As a result, the relic has played an important role in the local politics since ancient times. It’s believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country, which caused the kings to go to great efforts to protect it.
